Half dolls or pin cushions were designed of decorative torsos which were
once manufactured in great quantity to be attached to a variety of adult
household objects. Some were used for powder boxes, clothes brushes, hat pin holders, bridge tally pencils,
sachet cushions, powder puff receptacles, lamps, parasol handles, trinket boxes, nightwear
cases, cosmetic bags and thimble holders. Most were made of china and the ones with
arms outstretched are the most expensive. Sizes range from 1 inch to nine inches in
height with workmanship from the crudest Japanese copies to the finest
