lost one leg & still wearing his faded uniform standing on the
street selling his toy lams. these were children's toys, the fleece
made of cotton wool, spangled with gilt. The head was made of
composition. the cheeks painted red with two black spots for eyes &
with horns & legs made of tin. A piece of pink tape was tied
around the neck in place of a collar

11" Lunches for Shipyard Workers, In the early 20th Century,
during the 1st World War, women who lived in towns where there were
factories doing war work & where government shipyards were
located, helped in the war effort by putting up lunches at home &
taking them at noon to the men working in the yards. Although they
were paid only a small amount of money for their work, they had the
extreme satisfaction of knowing that they were helping the war effort

10" The peddler of salad greens was generally an old lady who
after working hard in her garden at home, started out for town, to
sell the vegetables she had raised. In her hands she carried four
sacks filled with greens, such as dandelions, spinach, lettuce &
mustard greens. Some times she had a bag of mushrooms also.
Over her shoulder she often carried a bag filled with notions. The
kindly disposition & gentle manner of the salad greens peddle made
her a welcome visitor
